Content is Queen: 5 Steps to Start Your Content Strategy
Content is Queen. This is a theme I share over and over again here, in my workshops, with my 1:1 clients and this week...on three different podcasts where I guested sharing my knowledge and expertise. Think of your content as the hub in the center of your marketing wheel. And the spokes coming out of that center hub are your tactics that together make up your marketing strategy: your website, partnerships, email marketing, live events and your social media.
If you're not creating content as your primary source of revenue, this process can seem daunting. BUT, it is so incredibly important. If created and executed correctly, your content strategy will only help you to build your trust, and authority with your community while producing more revenue and converting more customers. Here are five steps to get started:
Develop YOUR story. This is your WHY and a key piece of content to share over and over again throughout all of your marketing efforts. The more you share your own story, the more connected your audience will feel to you and your mission. The more you share your story, the more likely others are to share it for you.
Decide on 4-6 content buckets or themes that you will consistently share. ALL of your content will fit into these themes. This builds consistency for BOTH your planning and your community's consumption. It makes it easier when you decide what to post. It also helps your community to know what to expect. It keeps your goals streamlined. An important part to note: your content buckets can and will change over time, and that’s ok. You want to evolve based on what you are doing AND what you are hearing from your community. LISTEN to them, they will tell you what they want from you and you will want to deliver on that.
For each content bucket decide: how you will put the content out, what is the goal, and what is your call-to action. This is an exercise I work through with EVERY client to create a consistent strategy and plan.. Once you have this in place you have an outline to follow. Putting the work in up front makes the back end execution much easier than you ever could anticipate.
Sit down for 15-20 minutes and do a GIANT brainstorm, making a list of ALL topics you can create content around Reference this list as you plan out your content for the week or the month. I keep a digital sticky note on my desk top and whenever I think about a topic I want to write about or include in my content, I put it there for when I am deciding what to share.
Set aside two hours. Create ONE piece of content. I usually start with a blog post for my website. If you don’t have a website or a blog, create a long form Instagram or LinkedIn post. THEN think of ALL the ways that you can push the content out and drive traffic back to the original piece. How can you share it with the world? You'd be shocked how far this content can go.
Make it a point to create a new piece of content on a regular basis, whatever works for you—-once a week, every other week or once a month. One piece of content can go a long way when you continuously repurpose it. Regardless of the cadence that works for you, if you're a company, brand or a business today, your content will help you reach new people, generate more customer conversions, and keep your community coming back for more. Placing your content as the center hub on your marketing wheel will help the rest of your marketing strategies to fall into place more seamlessly.
Your business will thank you.
