5 Ways to Make a Comeback After Taking Time Off

I'm coming back from a really awesome few days in my hometown. I caught up with loved ones and dropped my daughter off at overnight camp for eight weeks.

What didn't I do you might ask?

I didn't work.

Not once.

I didn't check my email, I didn't respond to emails. Most of my social was scheduled before I left. I simply was present in the moment where I needed to be....and now I face re-entry as I get caught up.

You MUST take time off from time to time. It doesn't matter if you have your own business or not, shutting it down is imperative so that you can recharge and ultimately be better at whatever it is that you do upon returning.

So as summer is here, check out these tips for getting back into the swing of things after you return from a break. You'll thank me later.

1️⃣ Clear your schedule the day you return to work. Keep your schedule WIDE OPEN for the day you return to work and use this day as a catch up to get organized, NOT as a catch up day with clients.

2️⃣ Make a list of what needs to get done. Before you do anything upon returning, make a list of what needs to get done and the order of importance. Include everything from checking email, to scheduling calls, reaching out to clients, etc. Get a good picture of what needs to be done so that you can prioritize accordingly.

3️⃣ Block time on your calendar. Prioritize your list and block the time out on your calendar to accomplish the tasks accordingly. Treat each time block like an appointment and a non-negotiable. The tasks have to get done.

4️⃣ Free yourself from distractions.

  • Put on your do not disturb on your phone.

  • Close all unnecessary tabs.

  • Turn off text and social media notifications.

  • STAY OFF social media. (Don't go down that rabbit hole when you step back into work mode!)

  • Maybe even keep your "Out of Office" on.

  • Do what you need to do to focus on the tasks so that you can get caught up and jump back in.

5️⃣ Jot down any ideas you had when you were away. Often times when you take a break, your head is clear and you come up with ideas for work. Make sure that you jot these down and revisit them once you are back in action and caught up. By giving yourself time to sit on the ideas, you're also giving yourself time to decide if they are viable or not.
